For just over a decade in the 1990’s and into the new Millennium I was a Financial Adviser who organised literally hundreds of mortgages for people amongst many other matters. As a Mortgage arranger, it was clear that my role was to assist the people who wanted to buy a home, to be able to do so in the easiest manner and for the mortgage to fit their needs and assets. However the desire for a Mortgage was not the reason we met, or even my humour, it was the Home or occasionally a commercial property that would enable the client to fulfil their wishes and dreams that provoked them to call me up. The Mortgage like fuel in a vehicle was the means to an end, not the end in itself. By the same token, although students may well wish to have a degree, the choice of the course is rarely if ever made to ensure that by the time the course is over they will be earning the most money. If that was the case Nursing Degrees and Social Work Degrees would be empty, let alone Art Degrees. The link to the document which Sam has referred to his nonsensical tweet is here. Its time for him to step down and let a more competent and empathetic individual take on the role so that when they are sitting within the Department, they understand what role degrees play in the lives of people who attend Universities.
