I confess that ever since I began writing my blog, I have not had many days when a lot of people read it. The best day ever was in September 2013 when I wrote a blog about someone who was upsetting a lot of people and over 1000 people read the blog in one day. The purpose of todays blog is not to try to repeat that experience but on the other hand, given that the people who were upset in 2013 were police officers and there was only around 140,000 of them at the time, then this blog may well generate a lot more traffic. The people who should be upset with the subject of this blog are the 17.4m people who voted to Leave the EU. Of course several hundred thousand of those voters have died since, but there are still at least 17m who voted to leave. According to Julia Hartley Brewer, her tweet is written on behalf of all of the Leave voters which suggests that either she is lying or else that she has spent a lot of money to communicate with them and as votes are supposed to be made in secret that she has therefore broken numerous electoral laws. In any event to suggest that even 821 days ago that 17.4m people were of one mind just because they all voted the same way is a stretch beyond credibility, but now 821 days later this is nonsense. Many Leave and Remain voters will agree with Julia that
- We don’t want a snap election
- We don’t want Chequers
However the second referendum is a slightly different matter, because whilst many people are aware of the potential risk of another (not a second) referendum, the main reason is because after 2 years and 3 months today, the Government that Julia is attempting to communicate with have not been able to come up with any credible solution that they all support and Chequers is merely an inadequate sticking plaster, rather than a serious solution.
So it appears that Julia wants to deny the clear case for a referendum to determine the best way forward for our nation and instead she wants to be seen as the spokesperson for the 17m people who voted in that given way so that she can personally determine what sort of Brexit we should now be facing. We didn’t need to vote for her, she is simply demanding control of our nation. A sort of peaceful dictator. If that doesn’t worry the 6,000 people who liked her tweet, it should be of real concern to the rest of those who voted to Leave, let alone those who voted to Remain. Even though Theresa May was only elected by 37,718 people, that was 37,717 more than the people who think Julia is entitled to speak on their behalf!
