Government must correct Gavin’s speech

Hammond WilliamsonListening to Philip Hammond on Radio 4 Today this morning it is very clear that the grasp of how offensive and damaging the recent speech by Gavin Williamson (covered in my blog here) was outside of the tall and solid Whitehall silos is entirely lost to the Government. The big challenge is how to avoid warfare beginning between the UK and Russia and China following the appalling words, but equally how to establish trading arrangements with both nations as we leave the EU. Let us hope that in due course we either reverse Brexit, change the Government allowing Gavin’s successor to correct the mistake or else that the current Government opens its eyes and ears and steps in to apologise for his ignorance. Of course Hammond like Williamson is not the Foreign Secretary, but that is no excuse for their failure, particularly given that Hammonds own trip to China was cancelled by the Chinese Government following the speech.
