As the Labour Party faces many challenges and the Conservative Party is proud of how many people voted yesterday the news of this appalling claim needs to used to help many of us to tidy up the way in which political campaigns get treated. This piece emerged in the media two days ago, it was a very clear attempt by some rather appalling people to try to stop Labour from giving their party members some Brownies and one assumes some coffee after they had been campaigning for Tracy Brabin to become the Mayor of West Yorkshire. I personally would rather that people who are Independent of any Political Party would get elected but there were no Independent candidates. However we know far too well that there have been a significant number of cases recently of how wealthy people have invested funds in the Conservative Party. Some have subsequently been handed massive procurement contracts, in some cases without an opportunity for non funders to even apply for the contracts. Some of the others have ended up becoming members of the House of Lords and these cases have happened in Labour as well as Conservative Party deals. However to call on the Police to investigate if campaigners should be given Brownies when they have finished campaigning is deeply concerning. We need a much more balanced approach to political campaigning as we move forward of yesterdays elections. Anyway here is the piece from the BBC that explains what happened.

Election 2021: Tracy Brabin’s brownie giveaway not unlawful

A Labour candidate for mayor did not break election rules by handing out brownies while campaigning, police have said.

West Yorkshire Police had been looking into the allegations against Batley and Spen MP Tracy Brabin. Labour said the treats were only given to party members after canvassing – which is not against the rules. Former actor Ms Brabin is one of seven candidates in the West Yorkshire mayoral election on 6 May.

A force spokesman said: “West Yorkshire Police can confirm that after an investigation following the circulation of social media posts and a direct complaint re electoral matters that no offences have been recorded.” The mayoral election was originally meant to take place in May 2020 but was postponed due to the pandemic.

Voters in Leeds, Wakefield, Kirklees, Calderdale and Bradford can all make a selection.
