As their website explains, the proposed 2023 Review of Parliamentary constituencies by The Boundary Commission for England which has been published today is set out with a number of increased locations in the South East. As this map demonstrates there are several changes in Sussex. The historical shift of West and East Worthing has been removed which of course could have a significant impact on the political balance that is borderline in East Worthing if the other parties would be willing to hand over a great deal of support to Labour. However this constitution is now expanding into parts of the existing Arundel and South Downs Constituency. The other big shift is in the Lewes Constituency which is now going to be split into two Constituencies. The Lewes and Seaford area will be one and the Fletching and East Grinstead will be the other. This will potentially make the new Lewes Constituency more in favour of other parties than the Conservatives. The extension of the Hastings Constituency into Kent may not shift things too much, but it will require Labour and their associate parties to work much harder than is currently needed. So according to the website if we wish our views to be considered, please ensure they are received by them no later than the closing date of this statutory consultation period, which is 2 August 2021.
For those of us who are keen to see a better representation of the non Conservative voters in the whole of Sussex and given that Proportional Representation is some distance away, we will need to work even harder to see a change given that there will be changes to nearly all of the 16 Constituencies that are now going to become 17.
