Last Monday Roger Roberts who is the Lord of Llandudno asked a very simple question regarding the asylum seekers in the Calais area. The UK Government Minister Susan Williams who is the Baroness of Trafford responded to Roger but tragically the answer indicated that the Government does not discuss vital issues with the French Government. Let us hope that when we get the next British Government that they will be a lot more committed to speaking to the French Government. Indeed we need a new Government that is much more willing to embrace the Asylum seekers from the rest of the World
Roger: To ask Her Majesty’s Government what discussions, if any, they have had with the government of France regarding the treatment of asylum seekers in the Calais area.
Susan: The responsibility for asylum seekers and refugees lies with the authorities of the country in which they are present in accordance with their international obligations. France has a fully functioning asylum system and is party to both the ECHR and the Refugee Convention.
