These three petitions cover slightly different aspects and currently they together only have been covered by about 2,000 people – it would be fantastic if we could extend the signatures so do consider signing any of the 3 of them. It would be great to endorse them if you are willing to promote them. The first one has over 1,300 signatures but it is due to be deadline on 26th January. It was submitted by William Tavernor and it is available from here.
Hold a referendum on changing the voting system to proportional representation
Hold a referendum on implementing proportional representation for General Elections. The current First Past The Post system is no longer fit for purpose, governments should be more accountable. A more balanced electoral system is needed to restore the integrity and accountability of Parliament. Governments have run this country on party lines and have failed to uphold standards in public life. Major parties are able to use technology, the media and the current First Past The Post system to retain power and quash alternative opposition. The electorate needs Members in Parliament that represent them and their needs and wishes, to restore integrity and accountability. The only way to achieve this is a proportional representation electoral system.
The second petition has just over 500 signatures, it was submitted by Ruby Henderson and its deadline is 24th April and it is available here
Change the voting system to proportional representation (PR)
We believe changing the voting system for all elections to PR will make elections fairer, as the number of seats won per party will more directly represent votes cast. We believe First Past The Post (the current voting system) is extremely unfair. A good voting system should have the total number of seats gained be directly reflected by the total votes won. FPTP fails in this. This means that the party winning the most votes nationally is not even guaranteed to win any seats. We believe this is very undemocratic and many feel that their votes are wasted. Proportional representation systems should mean votes actually show the support for a party.
And the final one only has just over 50 signatures so far and it is available here it was published by Andrew John Marston and the petition will deadline on10 May 2023.
Introduce proportional representation, votes from 16, and compulsory voting
We want the Government to better represent the people and to move towards consensus politics, away from endless antagonism, by changing to a proportional representation system, with votes from 16 and compulsory voting. Without active participation of the whole nation the fragmentation of the consensus will continue. Government needs to reform and reset itself. Changing the electoral system, broadening the electoral base and making sure everyone casts a vote will achieve this. We also want the broadest consensus – the future of the next generation is at stake and they need to be heard.
