Somewhere in the years between 2017 and 2023 it will become cheaper to produce electricity through solar photovoltaic cells than through the burning of gas. The purple line of the graph shows the projected cost of using gas to produce electricity between now and 2030 and the red and brown lines show the use of PV cells. The distinction between the STA (Solar Trade Association) and DECC (Department of Energy and Climate Change) lines is suggested in this article by the STA as the cost of politics and a stable policy base. It is impossible to know which data is most accurate and we cannot be certain of the future in any event. However attempts by the coalition to row back on planning flexibility regarding PV solar farms is a matter of public record. The STA are claiming that if there was political certainty the cost of producing electricity using solar panels would fall more quickly. We will shortly elect a new Government. Whatever our Political views it seems vital that we elect a Government that is prepared to offer certainty and a clear policy framework for the PV industry, if we are too reduce the impact of fossil fuels on our environmental account. Even if we simply see this in terms of economics, we cannot afford a Government that is not committed to the use of PV solar panels to produce power in a clear and uncomplicated manner.
