Apart from the radio excerpts I have yet to watch or listen to the interviews with Paxman and Burley and their two studio guests. Its not that I personally lack interest in watching Miliband and Cameron, but unfortunately I haven’t executive control over the remote control in our house and over the years my interest in watching political cut and thrust has worn thin the patience of my housemates. I wonder how many hours of analysis these debates will generate over the next 6 weeks? Meanwhile the world will continue on its course and here in Brighton at least, the sun is shining although many people are struggling with the challenges of daily life, despite our great privilege and relative prosperity. Yesterday I attended a board meeting of a charity which works to help men and women who leave prison, attempting to improve their life chances so that they step off what for many is a revolving door of our criminal justice system. It is clear that the chaotic reform of this system by the coalition has turned a sows ear into a complete mess. Many of the advances taken by charities and public sector professionals in recent years could potentially be lost altogether. It was depressing to realise how clear the analysis was from a retired Police Officer, a judge and several of us who have spent many years working in the voluntary sector. I am sure that the CJS won’t have been one of the subjects that was raised last night but its one of the issues that should concern all of us. The next Government will need to do something to sort out the mess of Chris Graylings making!
