Its much easier to find fault than it is to find solutions – sadly if as it is reported, Ed Miliband will criticising the Prime Minister for mistakes made following the Libyan intervention in the context of the current Mediterranean migrant crisis he will be adding yet more fuel onto a fire that is already well lit. As convenient as this subject might be for party politicians during this general election campaign, what we need are examples of leadership that transcend party and even national boundaries. The limitations of even the EU begin to show in this story. The interview this morning on Today with Steven Woolfe MEP, the UKIP spokesman on migration gave a clear indication that while the tone of his voice may have been measured, that he had no real concept of how to resolve issues of sick and vulnerable people on boats that may or not be seaworthy. The challenge for most of our political parties is that they have already nailed their colours to the mast in issues of immigration and speaking about our responsibilities to peoples and nations well beyond our own borders will be very hard to introduce without even more cynicism from many in our nation. The fact that Ed Miliband has referred to Libya has at least set out a direction of travel to the reasons why some of these people have set out on their journeys, some of them as long as a decade ago. It will however be damaging if Miliband attempts to make a partisan point, and he risks taking us backwards in the process. The people who are really showing leadership on this issue are Save the Children. Once again the charitable sector is proving its great worth on a subject that is sadly lacking any real sign of statesmanship.
