The decision taken by the Mayor of London to stand as an MP raised many concerns with people living far away from the Capital City who had no opportunity to vote in either of his recent elections. However the fact that he has been elected does open up something of a constitutional issue. Boris as Mayor of London is also its Police and Crime Commissioner. Indeed when the think tank and Minister that introduced the idea of PCCs were explaining their rationale, they specifically pointed to the role of Mayor of London as a model for PCCs. The coalition made a ruling that no one who was an MP could seek election as a PCC and for this reason several MPs from different parties resigned as MPs, forcing by-elections specifically so they could fight the election in the role of PCC. On Thursday Boris was elected as MP because there is no constitutional barrier to an elected Mayor seeking election as an MP, even though this was clearly an oversight that clearly needs to be addressed. I have added my name to this petition calling for the Mayor and PCC of London or MP for Uxbridge and South Ruislip to resign from one of these posts so that the constitutional issue can be resolved. I would urge others to do the same. I also believe we need to see a change made to the rules regarding sitting Mayors standing as MPs as they are in a position of influence that other candidates cannot possibly match.
