Behind huge police and security service cordons in Bavaria, representatives of the worlds 7 most powerful nations plus all those who attend as observers, all ferried in by helicopters are due to hear our Prime Minister say “Corruption is the cancer at the heart of so many of the problems we face around the world today,” and that corruption “doesn’t just threaten our prosperity, it also undermines our security.” This speech to the G7 may have been focused on FIFA and the wider world beyond our own shores, but what about the issues a little closer to home? The security which Mr Cameron is meeting behind is not needed because of the corrupt actions of a 79 year old Swiss football administrator, nor is it as a result of the endemic corruption in some of the African and other states where nothing moves without a bribe or two. Our first world sense of disconnect from these mostly wealthy ruling politicians and their decision making, sometimes in direct contradiction to their electoral promises is at the root of this. Here in the UK the abuse of children behind the doors of residences inhabited by Judges, Priests and Police Officers along with MPs and members of the Lords is a cancer in our own nation, yet the need for a childhood sexual exploitation inquiry is not being delayed by FIFA, or by any third world corrupt practices. It is time for Cameron and 649 other British MPs to stand up and explain to all of us why an inquiry that was announced in July 2014 is not due to start until the end of the year, and may take 9 years to be completed. That these representatives have not done so and won’t do so may not be corruption in its vilest form, but it helps explain why some people are trying to disrupt the G7 meeting.
