The news reports on Radio 4 this morning that the Government has found a new way of screwing up the Health Service is hard to fathom. According to Dr Peter Carter who is the General Secretary of the Royal College of Nursing, our immigration rules will mean that from 2017 anyone from outside the EU who earns less than £35,000 (which includes most nurses) will need to leave the UK. This will impact the numbers of nurses available to look after you or I. One way to address this problem is to train more British and EU nationals, but despite 3 people applying for each training post, we are still not training enough nurses to keep all of our facilities open without our dependence on trained nurses from other nations who we are currently spending Millions to recruit. There can be no excuse for this sort of incompetence. Meanwhile people like my Dad who sadly died unexpectedly when in hospital for a routine operation on 1st June, or my friend Andy Silsby who has just disclosed on Facebook that due to his health, he needs regular transfusions rely on our NHS to look after them. This is not about Politics, this is about organisational competence across our Government, we need them to find some competence, and fast. The exodus is due to take place in 2017 and training takes more than 2 years, even if we did increase the number of training places immediately, we cannot fix the shortages that will be caused in 2017 simply by training more nurses.
