According to the College of Policing, senior Police Officers need to be given the opportunity to work in environments outside the world of Policing for periods that are long enough for them to fully understand the culture of other organisations. By implication this is intended to allow these senior officers to help change the culture of Policing. This is excellent news and has a great deal to commend it. However according to this article, the College of Policing have focused on a very narrow set of organisations, which suggests that they too are limited in their thinking and cultural influences. The article refers extensively to the world of retail and the plcs listed are British Airways, Barclays, BT and the Kingfisher group. The reality is that a great deal of our society is composed of smaller companies whose structures and approaches are very different from these large institutions. The reality for Police Officers is that they already work for a large institution which is well capable of throwing resources at issues that matter to those at high levels in a way that small businesses and charities  cannot and many other public sector bodies dare not. If this is a serious attempt to change the world of policing, then the College needs to extend their thinking into parts of Society that do not have the resources or influence of Barclays and BT. Clearly the benefit to the Police forces will be matched with the value to these other agencies and it is vital that we do not exclude smaller companies and charities from such opportunities.
