Long before the terrible events on the A27 in Shoreham at 1.20pm yesterday, Sussex Police were already very busy, as were the staff at the Royal Sussex County Hospital. However when the call came in along with South East Coast Ambulance Service and West Sussex Fire and Rescue all of these services and many more dropped what they were doing and reprioritised their day. Instead of doing what so many of us were instructed to do which was staying clear of a major disaster, these brave men and women ran into the flames and towards the dead and injured. On these occasions no one would want the training to be poorly resourced, or vehicles ill suited to the task. Equally we need there to be enough men and women to call upon for such situations. These services were also reassured that volunteer chaplains were also engaging with the incident, that local churches were being opened up for people to go to if they felt the need for a different focus. Many other volunteer based agencies also came into play, both at the crash site and well beyond it. Saying thank you seems hugely inadequate, but its the best I can manage.
