According to CNN late yesterday afternoon 4,400 migrants have been rescued from the coast of Libya in the space of 24 hours, in a massive international rescue operation involving several ships. The migrants were pulled from 22 vessels, including rubber dinghies, off the North African country’s coast on Saturday. The United Nations Refugee agency (UNHCR) said that as of mid-August some 264,500 refugees and migrants had crossed the Mediterranean this year, which is approximately 1,000 people each day. All of this puts 2,000-4,000 or so people currently in Calais and the 5,000 refugees crossing Macedonia into perspective. We have a small number of Conservative MPs getting upset with the BBC for daring to film a religious programme which was broadcast last Sunday from a makeshift church building. It is time for all of us to understand the desperate circumstances of these people cramming themselves into boats to flee a land that was once their home. MPs need to be calling for a recall of Parliament to agree a practical set of options for our nation to do more than send a few ships to the Mediterranean, not belly aching over the filming of a TV programme because it might be a bit too political for their liking.
