According to a tweet by David Cameron over the weekend we all need to be very frightened of the Labour Party following the election of Jeremy Corbyn. Its a sign of how limited the social media strategy of the Conservative Party is, for them to be appealing to their own supporters and asking them to retweet such warnings. Throughout the weekend they fleshed out this initial tweet and focused on the three elements. I find the national security element particularly disturbing as Jeremy Corbyn is a pacifist and was opposed to the interventions in Iraq and Afghanistan which Blairs Government took us into, and also the intended assaults in Syria which would have supported the work of various anti-Assad groups including IS that are now such a risk to our world. As I wrote last week, the juxtaposition of the current discussions and indeed actions over refugees across Europe, with the bi-annual Defence and Security Equipment International exhibition which opens tomorrow in London’s Dockland is very concerning. According to some analysts 25% of the nations that have been invited to attend this exhibition on British soil, close to the centre of our political and military power are graded Authoritarian by the Economist magazine Intelligence Unit. Whilst I don’t believe that DSEI which the Conservative Government supports so strongly is a tangible threat to our national security in the immediate term, I do believe that trading in weapons systems on UK soil with Authoritarian regimes puts the security of many Millions of people at risk around the Globe. It is appalling that our Government will send Ministers to DSEI that it has helped to organise when the Government has been so reluctant to engage with the many refugees fleeing the regimes whose trading we have helped to facilitate. Last week the Government was shamed into offering sanctuary to 20,000 refugees, this week our Prime Minister has flown to Lebanon to see for himself the scale of the challenge that the weapons sold through events such as DSEI are having on innocent people. I don’t fear Cameron or Corbyn as much as they have both done and said things I fervently disagree with, but I do feel concerned that at least one of them has helped other Governments to spread terror and death outside of the UK, in the name of our economic security!
