Leicestershire Police are half way through a 6 month pilot to offer British Sign Language to any 101 callers via a telephone service called Interpreter Now, they also have 17 staff who are trained in BSL, as part of their Police Link Officer for Deaf People, or PLOD service. The news of this service is explained in this article. Although the pilot is not ended, one imagines there are already indications of how successful this has been. Perhaps the other 42 Police services could look at adopting this system as well as ensuring that they are doing all they can to ensure that D/deaf people are not left unable to communicate with their local force. In 2006 it was estimated that there are 9 Million deaf people and 8.3 Million hard of hearing in the UK. One of the vital networks for D/deaf people in the UK that is beginning to emerge is the ‘Loop up’ groups. The idea began in Eastbourne and has now spread to many towns and cities. There is even a group that covers the whole of Surrey. These groups operate with a simple objective, to ensure that hearing loops (Audio Frequency Induction Loops) and similar systems such as infrared systems are working properly and that staff are trained in their use. It would be fantastic if the National Police Chiefs Council (NPCC) that has replaced ACPO could ensure that there is someone from within the many Police services who is in touch with Hearing Link, the charity behind the Loop Up groups. This would ensure that the local groups could offer their mystery shopper type surveys to the buildings operated by local Police forces.
