I wrote on Sunday calling on the Government as a key member of NATO to demand a response from the American Government following the terrible bombing raid on the MSF Hospital in Kunduz. A location that both American and Afghan Governments knew was a hospital, and even more disturbing, that the bombing continued for 30 minutes after we have been told MSF rang NATO to ask them to end the bombardment. The dead bodies and serious injuries cannot be ignored as Obama has finally apologised, after two very inadequate defensive statements from the Pentagon. The same Pentagon that MSF and the rest of us are supposed to trust to carry out an enquiry into the tragic failure to adhere to rules of engagement that should have been in place. The idea that agencies such as MSF should simply suck up the death and destruction and move on, with no real sense of what if anything will change in the decision making of the military is clearly not acceptable. All of the nations that are members of NATO which is currently meeting together, need to take an active role in reflecting on this terrible event and demonstrate how they will learn from it. The silence from our own Government on this issue must end.
