The announcement last night that the Architectural and Design collective, Assemble had won this years Turner Prize was well received in our home. The idea that a prize that has so often been associated with Art that made no sense to many and rarely offered any benefit to anyone other than those observing it at a gallery and the artist themselves was overturned in one well made if controversial decision. With a strong and vibrant echo of the Arts and Craft Movement, the Granby Street development improved by the collective working with residents, not for profit or to simply gentrify the parts of Toxteth that commercial developers had yet to get to is a real pleasure to walk around. When I was there in the Summer I came across the area purely by chance. I had no idea it was being developed with the help of this collective or who they were, but it was clear from walking around, that the area was both improved and also a truly authentic reflection of my home city, something that sadly is missed all too often when commercial gain is at the heart of what is often termed regeneration. The result from the Turner judges may have put the noses out of joint of some purer artists, but what a great way of bringing social reform and art together in one high profile prize. Well done Turner and Tate. Mostly well done Assemble and Granby Street. The fact that Granby Street is no more than a couple of miles from the Tate Liverpool is also a nice bit of resonance, and the joy of hearing so many Southern commentators mispronouncing Toxteth, emphasising the second syllable added comedy to the award.
