Its not the first time that David Cameron has visited an area of the UK following devastating flooding and made promises over speed and impact of the help that would be provided to residents. Sadly the failure to deliver previously on such promises do not appear to have taught this well educated man to adapt his desire to promise before understanding the costs, or perhaps he simply assumes that small pockets of residents will put up with dishonest statements. At the same time the pressure on providers of adult social care such as charities and local government are seeking meetings with the Government to call for help in meeting bills that will not be paid for care in 2015 and 2016. The Government has instead made statements about how they plan to increase payments in 2017. Perhaps because the sight of a Government Minister in a Care Home or joining a Home Help on his or her rounds is not something that would go down so well, there has been no photo shoots, or indeed any visits. We need Governments that will treat such issues as being as important as priorities of their own choosing. The amount of time that has been given over to prevent the Lords from forcing the Government to introduce votes for 16 and 17 year olds on the EU referendum shows that when the House of Commons wishes to engage with a subject, that they can do so. I believe that we do need to extend votes to all those who are aged 17 and potentially 16 too. The fact is that whatever the rights and wrongs of such a change, that there is a challenge for society that applies different age limits to different levels of responsibility. Its a debate that should involve people who have less to gain or lose in the outcome. On the other hand deciding how to deal with emergency floods or acute pressure on public services for our most vulnerable is something that should keep our lawmakers up at night and at work until solutions are found. Photo shoots give no benefit to those drying out their homes.
