I find it incredibly frustrating whenever broadcasters run particular stories and then declare that they invited the relevant Government Department to speak on the subject and no one was available for comment. I recognise that Governments cannot simply dance to the tune of every broadcaster, but I also believe that this is one of the ways in which our Government can make itself accountable to you and I. However rather than believing that the Government should be faster to respond, it appears that some people who work for  the Government actually blame other people for speaking up when the studio is empty. Nick Timothy is Director of the New Schools Network and a former Chief of Staff to Theresa May and he has just published an article on the Conservative Home website which actually criticises celebrities for speaking on subjects that they know little about. It is a fascinating insight into the mind-set of those who run, or used to run the Government Departments that set the policies that these people speak about. My own view is that people like Nick Timothy and his colleagues need to understand that we are all entitled to have a view about public policy, and that it is the responsibility of policy makers to ensure that their work is clear and understandable. One of the ways of ensuring that we understand their work is to attend TV and radio studios to explain what they are doing on our behalf. As it happens I partially agree with Nick that Katie Hopkins has been given lots of publicity that is out of proportion to her knowledge, so if we could get policy makers to speak up we might achieve two benefits from one action.
