Having watched Prime Ministers Questions on various occasions it is clear that when they are together in their Westminster debating chamber, our MPs believe that essentially anything goes and one wonders if some of them behave in a manner that plays up to the cameras. Of course debates don’t just take place in the House of Commons, and at present  the use of twitter seems to be in its element when it comes to the debate on the EU and the referendum due in June. Over the weekend it became clear that a local MP had been promoting some false information regarding the EU and doing so in a manner to try to shape the debate on the EU. Maria Caulfield is the MP for Lewes and it appears that the basis for her comments were a leaflet that were delivered to her door from a local business. The farmer had incorrectly understood that he was unable to recover egg boxes due to EU legislation. Maria either intentionally or neglectfully took this leaflet as being correct and took to twitter to argue that we should leave the EU because of their interference in such a classic case of the nanny state. Of course it is one thing to make false accusations, and quite another to verify if they are false. However it appears that the egg box argument has been well researched and it is not the EU but our own Government that has determined that reusing egg boxes risks spreading salmonella and is to be avoided if possible. This correction was relayed to Maria, not just by myself, but by some of her colleagues. However to date, Maria has chosen not to make clear her correction to this posting on twitter. Its not as though the EU referendum will be determined by the state of British egg boxes, but we do need a debate in which mistakes are corrected as soon as possible and lies are avoided altogether. The coast remains clear for Maria to correct her mistake via twitter, but if she chooses not to correct her comment about egg boxes, one is left wondering if she was lying all along!
