Daniel Hannan, Conservative MEP for our region is backing the Brexit campaign, along with a number of other Conservative MEPs including Syed Kamall, MEP for London and also the leader of the Conservatives in the European Parliament. Add to these MEPs, those who are members of UKIP, a party which is of course campaigning to remove us from the European Parliament and we have quite a crowd. I know I am not alone in finding their position a peculiar one, recognising that they are arguing to leave an institution that our taxes pay them to be members of. However as they and so many other people point out, there has not been an opportunity for ordinary people to express their voice on the EU since the mid 1970’s apart from electing men and women like them who want us to leave. However all of that will change in just over 3 months time. On 23rd June when we do get a chance to vote to remain or leave the EU, there will be no doubt, the British people will have had their say and the outcome will be clear. If we do decide to stay in the Parliament, it seems vital that our representatives will be people willing to argue for a strong British voice in the Parliament, no doubt many of us will want representatives who are prepared to articulate for extensive reformation of the institution, but surely none of us will deserve to be represented by people who are opposed to the institution that they have argued against so vehemently. I believe it is time that all those MEPs who oppose the EU are willing to stand up and be counted, making it clear that if we all choose to remain in the EU, that we will be represented by people who support the institution, even if they want to see major change in the way it works. After all if we do vote to remain, it would make no sense at all for people like Daniel Hannan, Nigel Farage et al to continue to speak on behalf of a nation that has backed our membership of the very thing they are opposed to.
