The stories emerging from Brussels and the tragic loss of life is being read by a few politicians through the lens of the political situation in Europe. This is clearly in very poor taste and nonsensical as is the idea that somehow Europe is experiencing terror in a way that other Continents have not and do not do on a daily basis. The idea that the evil men and any women involved in these attacks can be understood simplistically is wrong, yet every action taken by individuals to show our humanity and kindness to other people cannot do any harm and will  almost certainly do some good to others. If the solidarity shown through Je Suis Charlie and I am Brussels along with the many other responses to this attack could be galvanised more widely we might begin to focus the attention of world leaders on the death and destruction in the nations and areas where a great deal of the worlds terror is being fermented. The sense of panic and desire to flee Brussels by people now complaining about the cost of a Ryanair flight or the refusal to to travel there by others wanting to have a refund on their Eurostar fare must surely be resonating even vaguely with some people who have hitherto been unsympathetic with the cause of those fleeing Syria, Libya and other war zones. Whatever the failings of the intelligence and policing agencies in Belgium, they did not cause this outbreak of terrorism, they may need to change in order to suppress further attacks, but we need to do more than suppressing attacks. We need to deal with the causes of conflict across the world more effectively than we currently do. In his COBR-A meeting this morning let us hope the Prime Minister looks beyond our citizens and our national protection in the narrowest sense and looks to the causes of conflict in places where we have gone to war or have failed to speak up.
