My home city of Brighton and Hove contains amongst many jewels in its crown, the premises which were built in 1908 as a result of the huge wealth of Andrew Carnegie, Hove Library. As the Council and residents attempt to find agreement on the future of the library collection and the building at 182 Church Road, it would be fantastic if the two sides in the dispute could find a compromise, but when I last looked, that seemed unlikely. However it is vital that once the dust has settled on the concluding elements of the disagreement, that the investment made by Steel magnate Carnegie is not allowed to be forgotten and lost to the community in our city. My original home town is a place called Crosby on Merseyside, a place made famous recently by the Anthony Gormley installation ‘Another Place’ as well as the place of birth of Kenny Everett, Anne Robinson, Lawrie Taylor, Cherie Booth and Jane Garvey. We also had the benefit of a Carnegie Library which I visited many times when I was growing up. After it suffered the same fate as Hove Library appears bound to suffer, the building has lain empty since 2013 and continues to be a focal point for local energy as solutions are sought for its future. Although the Crosby building is 3 years older than its Hove counterpart, the issues it faces are very similar. I hope that the energy that is being brought to bear by both sides in the Hove dispute can be deflected from pure conflict and give consideration to how the wonderful building can be regenerated to the benefit of all visitors and residents of our city.
