The furore emerging from the various Brexit campaign groups about the Governments decision to send out a referendum leaflet and their view that it will influence you and I in our voting behaviour is in stark contrast to many of the same people and their response to the call for an election address for the Police and Crime Commissioner candidates to be distributed to the same voters. It is appalling that a Government which has introduced PCC’s into local communities, is unwilling to resource an election address so that people like you and I know who we can vote for, yet is prepared to send a leaflet to us to persuade us how to vote on the EU, just because they can choose how to spend our money. Yesterday on Radio 4 Michael Fallon defended the Governments decision to send out the leaflet on the EU, yet he did not see fit to vote for an election address for the PCC elections when that was debated last year. What a hypocrite! However he is not alone in his hypocrisy, the whole cabinet are hypocritical for the same reason. It was Theresa May who led the campaign to prevent the funds being made available to fund a PCC leaflet in 2012 and again in anticipation of this years election. Yet she is part of a Government that has decided to send out leaflets to tell us about why they think we should vote in favour of the Government policy as part of the referendum. It is vital that all electors are fully informed when they go out to vote, or decide to stay at home. Keeping information from electors should be seen as electoral fraud, particularly when the Government and the other political parties are able to benefit from election broadcasts and space on interviewers couches, and they are taking part in the elections. This approach fully disadvantages Independent candidates such as I was in 2012. It is particularly frustrating that on the same day that PCC candidates were submitting their papers to stand in the election, knowing that they would not benefit from an election address, that the Government was debating the EU leaflet so robustly.
