This week along with marking the 90th Birthday of Queen Elizabeth is also the 10th Anniversary of a trip to the Artic that the World Wide Fund for Nature organised to take the leader of the Conservative Party. It was as a result of this trip that David Cameron promised that his Government would be the greenest Government ever. It is clear that while all Governments incrementally adopt ever stronger environmental standards and naturally take advantage of the latest technology for renewable energy, that this Government has not only failed to deliver the step change that Cameron was promising, but that he and George Osborne have rowed back on decisions and proposals that the Lib Dems introduced in their time in the coalition. Many of the tax breaks provided for renewable energy installations have been withdrawn, often without a plan and in some cases despite previous promises to the contrary. As the WWF state on the website “Last year, the UK helped broker a strong climate agreement in Paris. In 2016 a bold plan of action from the UK on carbon reduction will send a strong signal to the markets, the public and the body politic that ‘going green’ is not a slogan, but an economic necessity.” Assuming that we remain in the EU and that we all endorse this Governments policy on Europe, it is vital that David Cameron uses the remaining period of his Premiership to rescue his tattered and bruised promises from the back of the cupboard and brings them to the top of his agenda once again. Once the referendum is over, we need to remind Cameron that he is at least one promise short of a Government.
