We need a level playing field

images3E47QAO7The call for a level playing field for candidates in elections came this morning not from a failed embittered candidate but from Gavin Millar, QC of Matrix Chambers who is an expert in election law speaking on Radio 4 after it has been disclosed that the Conservative Party used their national funds to publish leaflets to assist local candidates as part of the General Election in 2015. Once again the unfair advantage that large parties have over individual candidates is emerging, blinking and shocked into sunlight of scrutiny. It is of course not news to people who have ever stood as Independent candidates. Although each candidate has to account for what they spend on campaigns, the account from party candidates appears to ignore the phone banks that each party establishes for every election. Perhaps the fault is ours for not challenging these corrupt practices, but bearing in mind these laws are broken by people who claim to be law makers, one assumes that they know better. How many elections have been bought using these illegal tactics? How many of us are represented by MPs, MEPs, Councillors and PCCs who have broken the law to achieve success in the election?
