In a society that is broadly speaking out of love with its political leaders and cynical about the nature of politics, images such as this one should be seen as a good thing. The decision by Coombe Road Primary School to include an image of the earth with Caroline Lucas MP’s name plastered over it as part of their float for the childrens parade should be applauded. Not because of its potential political implications, but because we need to encourage links between MPs and the Schools in their constituency. The annual pride march involves floats from each of the main political parties and one of my previous blogs called on the parties to collaborate and join together in their support for pride, all working together in the same part of the parade. That blog fell on deaf ears and I am sure this one will too. However to encourage civic engagement with our political decision making and decision makers is vital. Sadly all too often the only time we see our community mobilised is when something lots of people oppose is proposed. The annual childrens parade is a great day out for residents and visitors to Brighton. The idea that some of the children might want to acknowledge the hard work of MPs like Caroline is great news. Sadly there was at least one pocket of moaners. Moaner in chief was Conservative Councillor Ken Norman. Its perhaps understandable that the countries first Green MP and someone who does make a substantial contribution to our city is more likely to be a promoted by School children than certain other politicians. However if I was in a position to advise Ken I would suggest he joins in the celebration rather than oppose young people. It is surely better to be included in the childrens parade than on bonfire night in Lewes?
