The problems that the EU referendum seems to be causing for the Conservative Party as they turn on one another were an easy to predict set of self inflicted wounds. Why did these Politicians not anticipate that the long and often boring campaign would lead to civil unrest amongst people who were always teetering on the edge of public disagreement? To listen to grown men and women, making personal criticisms of one another and then complaining that others are making personal criticisms of them would be disturbing amongst any group of people, but these are people who claim to be political leaders, and statesmen and women. It is these people who want us to trust them to make important decisions on the NHS, Education, Housing, Policing etc. In a Primary School such behaviour might be understood as something that children would grow out of. Sadly it seems too late for people like Boris Johnson and David Cameron, or Nigel Lawson and Michael Heseltine to grow out of their behaviour. However there is one possible way forward. All that is needed is for these men and women to withdraw from the debates. This is in any case not their decision. It is ours. Why not shut up and leave the rest of us to reflect on the issue for ourselves. It seems radical to suggest, but actually there are plenty of others willing to speak out. We may not want Benedict or Paloma to be seen as policy setters, but they are at least prepared to express their views on this one issue. They are not alone, but for the voices to be heard, the politcians need to withdraw!
