Foodwaste

IMG_3784-e1459523464272-300x168According to Tesco’s chief executive, Dave Lewis speaking in Cape Town in a bid to implore companies to do more to tackle food waste, his own business has seen a 4% increase in food waste to 59,400 tonnes over the last year. That is one Supermarket, amongst 3 or 4 of a similar size and many other smaller ones. I am proud to be associated with a Sussex based charity called FareShare which last year redistributed nearly 500 tonnes of food waste. On this basis Tesco could support over 100 such schemes if every tonne of food waste could be recovered. Add to this the other 3-4 large supermarkets and some 400 or so schemes could operate across the UK. We need to applaud Tescos for telling us how much waste they have and to encourage the creation of schemes like the one in Sussex.
