The challenge which many people in the South East are currently facing in the light of a collapsing train system is a matter of great concern. Along with regular commuters, those of us who occasionally travel by train and whose journeys can be just as chaotic are also being impacted by this injustice on a daily basis. The pain felt in our communities by this unreliable service is compounded for many readers by the lack of realistic alternatives. Our road system, particularly in East Sussex means that unlike in some other parts of the country, most local commuters are denied an opportunity to take to the road as a fall back solution. This is particularly acute for residents of Newhaven and Seaford, where the cuts have been almost 100% and the road routes to Lewes, Brighton or Eastbourne is already very difficult. Add to that the challenge for disabled passengers and the town is under immense pressure. Of course a few Sussex residents are fortunate enough to earn large enough salaries or possess sufficient wealth to allow them to enjoy two or more properties of their own, one near where they work and another where they usually return to at the end of each working day. These well resourced individuals may be able to weather a storm that seems to be destined to last many more months, not days or even weeks. Another alternative to commuting is the use of the internet, not a realistic option for many commuters but potentially a way forward for a few . However just like the impoverished road system in Sussex, our rural communities are mostly denied access to a meaningful broadband service, this denies those who could work from home from doing so if their work depends on the use of such technology. Whilst improvements have been made over the last few years, this is taking far too long in the light of these other pressures. It appears that the Government is currently unwilling to look at stripping the Southern franchise from Thameslink Govia, so what else is an option for the 1.5M residents of our area? We need our politicians to look at all options! Simply wringing their hands as has been the case in the last few months is not sufficient. Claire Perry is right that there are no quick fixes, for rail, road or broadband, but we need solutions to at least 2 of these problems urgently.
