Pensionable age?

imagesAlthough the age for Pensions is now approaching 68 years, the fact is that for many of us 65 seems an important milestone to acknowledge. On 28 July 1951 the Refugee Convention was signed by 144 Government representatives In Geneva. The Refugee Convention is the key legal document that forms the basis of the work of the work of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees or UNHCR. The convention defines the term ‘refugee’ and outlines the rights of displaced people, as well as the legal obligations of States to protect them. The core principle is non-refoulement, which asserts that a refugee should not be returned to a country where they face serious threats to their life or freedom. It would be fantastic to think that after 65 years such a convention would not be needed, yet we all know that it is needed more today than ever before. It would be heartening if our Government could stand up today and commit itself to ending the causes of refugee flows for ever. A good start would be to stop bombing and killing innocent people in other nations, and demand that our allies do the same. As this news report of an incident from 10 days ago shows, it would seem that the Refugee Convention cannot retire, just yet.
