Running our government must be challenging at the best of times and there are numerous unexpected events which occur from time to time, and which demand that the Prime Minister and her/his team appear to have a plan, even if that is the opposite of the truth. Last month after years of promising a referendum on the EU and campaigning as though the result could go either way, David Cameron displayed a complete failure when it became clear he did not have a plan prepared for the event that we did vote to leave. To be fair his colleagues on the Vote Leave side of the debate were just as inept. Just over a month later we have a new Prime Minister and a new Cabinet, and yet we are being treated to the same sense of inadequacy. After months of debate amongst the EDF board following years of bidding to build a new Power Station at Hinkley Point, their board finally voted to build the project, even though it is clear that it will dramatically challenge their internal capacity and that the costs and timescales may become a major problem for all of us. Whatever the rights and wrongs of this decision for EDF and the rights and wrongs for the country, two senior politicians appear to have been caught napping. Greg Clark has been part of the Conservative front bench since 2006 and Theresa May since 1998. The decision regarding Hinkley Point C has been  approved by Governments going back to 2008, and as Prime Minister and Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, Greg and Theresa should have been ready for this outcome. However patently they were not and our standing nationally and internationally will once again be brought into question. This is not good enough.
