Over the Summer I enjoyed a short break in Dorset, which was made a great deal more interesting thanks to the combined efforts of tourist agencies helping the various attractions to present a County wide network of similar places to visit. A great deal of this was presented in printed format through leaflets and as we approached venues near the County border, the offer extended to the same sort of provision in Devon or Somerset. As a resident of Sussex for nearly 40 years I have been oblivious to any similar promotional approaches here. When we do have visitors my own response to questions as to where people could go for a day visit is based on the limited knowledge that I possess and places I have visited. On my return I was delighted to discover that there is an online presence for Brighton and Hove and there is a similar one for Sussex although it is a bit less visually exciting, but both of these mean that tourists can take advantage of the internet listing of such events and locations. There are clearly a number of omissions from the listing for the Sussex website such as numerous historic places of worship that I am certain would be of interest to visitors. I recall years ago being involved in a project called sacred Sussex which attempted to provide just that type of information. However while the Sussex website provides a relatively easy to find link to the Brighton site, there does not appear to be any obvious reciprocal link back the other way. This seems a bit of a shame and reflects the way in which the City and the Downs can sometimes appear to operate in isolation from one another. It is vital to ensure that Sussex as a whole provides a strong tourism offer to ensure that people considering visiting the South are able to find out what great places we can provide. We have a great deal more to gain from emphasising links with our geographical neighbours, than we do from pretending we don’t need them.
