The images and sounds of Theresa May in Hangzhou over the last few days as she attended her first G20 summit as Prime Minister has been a reminder of how few women get the chance to speak at that level within the World. The photograph shows that such gatherings are dominated by men. Being one women amongst many men will not be a new experience for Mrs May, but nevertheless it does add the challenge she faces on our behalf as she meets people like Presidents Putin and Obama. I have heard and read a number of speeches she has made about our place in the world, post Brexit and I understand how important that is for her and for many of those she has been meeting with to resolve such matters. Clearly it is important for us too. However knowing how involved our soldiers and weapons are in conflicts in places like Syria and Yemen, Iraq and Afghanistan as well as our knowledge of war and conflict in other places it is not unreasonable to hope that some of the discussions have also been about how to bring peace to these places and more broadly to our world as a whole. Her discussions with Putin and Obama gave her a great opportunity to speak of such matters face to face, it may mean that other issues needed to be sacrificed in the limited time available, but what could be more important to all of us? I may be being naïve to assume that such events are an opportunity to bring together people who could between them make a difference to the lives of the Millions of people currently living in refugee camps, far away from where they would call home. There are of course many other matters such as people trafficking and slavery, matters that Mrs May has spoken of that would also make a real difference in our world. Perhaps they were discussed but just missed the news cycle? Let us hope so.
