The shiny façade of our national ‘plans’ to leave the EU seems to be slipping and cracks are appearing with less than 5 months before Article 50 is enacted and formal negotiations are underway. We have moved from Brexit means Brexit and a defiant refusal to disclose any information to anyone outside of the Cabinet, to a willingness to discuss the matter with anyone who heads up a big enough business. We don’t have any businesses with the clout of Nissan manufacturing cars here in Sussex and even if we did, I doubt if many of us would be any the wiser. However a further revelation occurred in the House of Lords on Monday 24^th October when members were discussing a statement on the Council of Europe. Lord Clive Brooke raised a question to the leader of the House revealing that “Ministers and officials are holding meetings on Brexit around the country.” He asked if the Government would publicise these meetings. Sadly Baroness Natalie Evans, Leader of the House was unwilling to agree to this, she instead suggested that he ask individual Lords during normal debates if they or their department are holding meetings where they are taking place. This seems a very chaotic way of finding out such information and clearly we won’t know until such debates have taken place. As a local resident and someone involved in running a small business along with an involvement in a number of charities, I would be keen to know if there are any meetings taking place in our area as the plans for Brexit will impact all of us! With a mere 14 Tory MPs out of 16 here in Sussex one would assume that it would be easy to find out how to hear from one of the Government Ministers about their plans. However sadly I suspect we won’t be any wiser in March than we are now beyond what the newspapers and broadcasters have to share with us.
