On Friday the Argus newspaper carried the following piece written by me as their Opinion Piece on the idea that if we are to get the best deal from leaving the EU we need local debates that cross the Leave/Remain lines and allow us to begin to articulate what we want: Theresa May has promised that she will enact Article 50 to begin the process of exiting the EU by the end of March. According to my calculations the 20^th January marks the three-quarter point between the referendum on 23^rd June last year and the end of March. Yet we still have no idea what our exit strategy will look like or how to communicate our preferences regarding the new world order! I know from my own discussions with some Brexit voters that their reasons for leaving varied significantly and yet people such as Farage, Gove and certain current Government Ministers speak as if there is homogeneity amongst these 17Million people. I deeply regret that we voted to leave, but I accept that the vote was decisive and providing Parliament is fully involved in taking the decision, I just want the opportunity to help shape our future, rather than to have it determined by people who have already changed their story on several occasions. The problem is that every time some of us who voted to remain, raise suggestions, they are shouted down with cries of remoaner! In the absence of a meaningful debate led by the Government on what our future should look like, perhaps we all need to work together, taking into account both Leavers and Remainers and people who did not or could not vote and hold local discussions and debates on the matter. That might seem a bit DIY in nature but at least it reduces the risk that our voices will be superimposed on whatever approach the Government finally does adopt.
