I watched some of Theresa Mays interview with Andrew Neil last night and did not hear a single word that explained what Mrs May along with her Cabinet and Advisors had learned from listening or even talking to people like me. She stated that she knew that those who voted to leave, did so for reasons of sovereignty and to get back control of our borders, yet also pointed out that the lies about £350M per week and promises we would remain in the single market were no different to the lies and promises on the other side of the argument and could therefore be discounted in her analysis. I heard nothing to suggest that the remainers who represent nearly half of those who voted, whose views would be as ‘easy’ to intepret as the leavers, had featured in her thinking. It is these 48%, people like me and Mrs May herself who need to be helped to understand the way forward and whose views also need to be taken into account if we are to be a united nation. A few days ago I wrote following Simon Kirbys call for us to unite behind the Government in their actions to depart from the EU. The point that is missing in the analysis of both Simon Kirby and Mrs May is that people do not unite behind a dog whistle call to heel. That may work in their party or at least in the Cabinet when the cameras are switched on, but she knows full well it does to work with a large number of disaffected people. She has after all faced the Police and been forced to listen to their rejection of her point of view. I don’t expect her to do a U turn on article 50 although I understand that it is not irreversible. What I do expect is the Government to do in the next 2 years what they have failed to do in the last 9 months which is to listen rather than simply speak or else we will be in a big mess in 2019 as we cut off our ties from the EU!
