One of the books that I have in my bookstore is Small is Beautiful by EF Schumacher. When I first read it I was challenged by the idea of how food miles and mass manufacture are bad for our economy. The truth is that our society is currently built around structures which seem wrong and need changing. However sometimes counter-intuitively these structures can be turned to create a good outcome, even if they are in need of reform in the medium term. One of the positive stories on the website of a charity called FareShare Sussex which is a charity I am proud to have helped found back at the end of the last Century. It is now based in Moulsecoomb and the story is written by a guest blogger called Steve Huckle. A couple of weeks ago he wrote about a delivery to the charity from the Avonmouth depot of a large supermarket chain. The fact that shops in Sussex gets deliveries from Avonmouth seems bizarre and indeed Steve raised that question in his blog. However the positive outcome is that tonnes of surplus food are delivered in this way to FareShare and as a consequence they redistribute it to charities that help feed over 7000 people each week. Such an operation is very impressive and well worth a visit if you get a chance. Failing that the website tells an inspiring story!
