Late last night and this morning some people involved in the use of social media have been proposing various courses of action following the attack by the three men on London Bridge and at Borough Market. It is far to early to know what has happened and who was involved, however this terrible set of events occured three days after an article published in the Independent newspaper on Thursday. The article refers to an incomplete report that has been compiled by the Home Office following an investigation into the foreign funding of extremist Islamist groups. The inquiry was commissioned by David Cameron as part of a deal with the Liberal Democrats in December 2015, in exchange for the party supporting the extension of British airstrikes against Isis into Syria. Although it was due to be published in spring of 2016, it is still incomplete. It is understood to contain “sensitive” material that is believed to focus on Saudi Arabia, which the UK recently approved £3.5bn worth of arms export licences to. In the light of the attack in Manchester nearly two weeks ago and last nights attack in London, it seems vital that our focus should not just be on the tactics needed to protect our streets from such attacks but also a more indepth and thorough approach to ensure that our strategy as a nation is also robust. Any risks we create either by our own actions abroad or the decisions taken by nations we claim to be our allies must be addressed. The seven innocent lives lost, some 48 injured and the risks taken by the Police and other emergency services deserve to be treated with greater importance than keeping such material locked down for fear of embarrassing either our own Government or that of a nation which many believe is no ally of ours.
