All jobs in established organisations bring with them baggage from their predecessor. When Cressida Dick took over as Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police one of the items in the hard to resolve cupboard or perhaps garage, was the three water cannon which Boris Johnson purchased following a decision that one assumes took in to account the views of Bernard Hogan-Howe, Cressida’s predecessor. Whatever his views there are certainly a number of senior officers across the UK who support the use of such weapons. Whatever the views of Hogan-Howe the weapons which were purchased for around £200,000 and since then have attracted substantial costs for converting them and maintaining them since they were purchased in 2014, are now seen as a financial liability of around £325,000. After his election Sadiq Khan promised he would try to sell them and return some funds to the work of crime prevention. However it now appears that Cressida Dick is faced with sending them to the scrap yard. Just as Sadiq Khan would have claimed some of the credit had a sale been successful so Boris Johnson should be held to account for the loss of public money. It is clearly not something that could be blamed on Cressida or even Sadiq. However the three people who are responsible are Sir Bernard, Johnson and of course Theresa May who was the person who dithered for nearly two years before declaring they could not be used in her role as Home Secretary. It is important that Theresa and Boris take responsibility for their actions or inaction.
