Defending Brexit by attacking the truth?

HannanAs we all seek to make sense of the impact of Brexit the men and women who are well paid as our MEPs are in a crucial position try to assist their constituents and the rest of society to ensure we don’t lose sight of the big picture issues. Of course they are also responsible for correcting false information put out by Brussels, the Government and the Media. There is plenty of false information to deal with. During the run up to the vote I don’t recall my MEP, Daniel Hannan criticising the Sun or the Mail or the Express for replicating lies and embellished arguments about the value in us leaving the EU. However he has been on twitter this morning implying that the BBC may have misrepresented the truth about our lack of nurses in the NHS. This is a major issue for us and and indeed is one of the reason why many of his constituents rejected his recommendations to vote to leave on 23rd June 2016. The fact is that despite Daniels comment, without factual information it is impossible to know how many nurses have left the UK (or not applied for jobs) because of English tests and how many have chosen not to apply because they believe that we have in effect closed the door to their future in our nation. The same argument could be made about the continued cap on NHS pay rises which Daniel to my knowledge has never challenged his party about. The one thing that can be addressed relatively easily (apart from pay rises) if indeed Daniel is correct in his attack on the BBC’s journalism is for the NHS to provide English language courses for nurses when they first arrive and for the rules that Daniels party introduced to be made more flexible. After all if there is a shortage of nurses and language qualifications are the only barrier this should be addressed before the NHS crisis deepens. I look forward to seeing Dan tweet about the need for language training. Alternatively if Dan is simply attacking the BBC, no doubt he will in due course look for another way of attacking them. One of the great changes in 2019 is the loss of Dan and his close friends in UKIP who once out of office as MEPs will no longer have their voices heard above the views of their current constituents. Perhaps that is a small silver lining to the very dark clouds these people have helped to create.
