Lets help end the ‘Trouble on our Trains’

train troubleLast night on Channel 4 Dispatches the documentary showed some of the small number of very appalling men who attend football matches across the UK, using trains to get from home to the relevant football grounds and back again. One major obstacle that is presented to British Transport Police as they try to prosecute these men for their racism including anti semitism and sexism is that the train carriages that are fitted with video cameras are not fitted with microphones. The fact that there are cameras fitted is clearly a good thing under these circumstances but to fit microphones as part of the camera installation would involve very little extra cost and no extra work on top of this. There are a number of products available on the market that include a microphone as part of the camera installation and the sound track is recorded alongside the video so there is not additional cabling or infrastructure needed. If one rape or sexist or racist incident could be prosecuted with the help of the microphone integrated into the camera housing, this would surely be a good investment by network rail or the relevant franchise. It is time to address this terrible failure.
