How did EDF get things so badly wrong?

imagesThe request by EDF our energy supplier at work to provide us with a Smart Meter came to a head a couple of weeks ago. They rang and we had a long debate in the office, considering all of the elements that the 30 minute switch off would have to our computer system and the rest of our equipment. We planned for the event scheduling it in for 3pm on Friday. We spent quite a bit of time communicating with everyone in the business. During the day they attempted to come earlier than we and they had planned but we explained that our planning meant that the work needed to take place at the agreed time. Finally the electrical contractor arrived to carry out the change and took a quick look at our electrical supply. He then explained that he was only qualified to work on single phase systems and as we have a three phase system (our business is based in an industrial park, and our use of three phase is something EDF should be very well aware of) he would need to go away and get EDF to arrange for someone else to do the work. So all of our planning, the changes to our business have been a complete waste of time, simply because the company that supplies our power is unaware of what type of power we use!
