The need for politics to step back

Rob WilsonAfter 5 years of the chairmanship of the Charity Commission by Tory supporting William Shawcross, a man whose knowledge of social and overseas need based charities was clearly non existent when he took office we need a new broom to come in and make changes to the Board. Even as he leaves Shawcross has still managed to show himself as being too Tory, too London centric and too out of touch with many of the 165,000 charities he is supposed to be champion of. The latest rumour is that ex Government Minister, ex Tory MP Rob Wilson who was Minister responsible for the third sector from 2014 to 2017 when he lost his seat has been interviewed for the Chairmans role. If selected, his appointment would be a very damaging appalling mistake. He needs to do what should have been demanded of Shawcross and that is to spend time getting to understand what it is like to run a social needs charity before being invited to apply for the role of Charity Commission Chair person. We need people who are much more distant from political parties than either Shawcross or Wilson, particularly when their party is in power and particularly when Wilson was Minister responsible for this area up until 6 months ago. We also need people who understand the breadth of the charity sector. While Wilson will have learned a lot as a Minister, he needs to demonstrate that he has gained some meaningful experience in the sector that is a desperate state, thanks to his own party before he can be considered for this post.
