Brexit puts dangerous chemicals in reach

reachIn the absence of the economic and indeed any other assessments by our Government of what Brexit will lead to, we are faced with a myriad of views and analysis that is in the public domain. Any prospect of members of the public trusting David Davis is now so low that whether he chooses to resign or be sacked by Theresa May, the Government is now destined to fail. However there are numerous sources of information in the public domain that helps the rest of us make a judgement call. According to this article a business coalition which includes Boot and Kingfisher (who own B&Q and Screwfix) has warned that Brexit could result in a downgrade in domestic eco-design standards, an increase in the use of dangerous chemicals, and “backsliding” on recycling. leaving the EU’s REACH (Registration Evaluation, Authorisation and restriction of Chemicals) regulation would mean “instant loss of access to a world-leading database on chemical safety covering more than 25,000 chemicals”. Of course databases are just one element of our EU membership which in time we can recreate. In the meantime businesses will simply be forced to make things up as they go along. Perhaps David Davis before he switches off the lights in the Government can tell us what plans he had for replacing REACH? On the other hand he clearly had very few plans for any outcome so one imagines REACH is low down on his list of priorities.
