What the Tories & Beavers have in common

BeaverIt is interesting that the Government controlled by the Tory party following the 2017 election which they barely won and Brexit which is our direction of travel as a nation as a result of a referendum in June 2016 which just about voted for are both so similar. The failings of our Brexit negotiations and the chaos of our national government, in part complicated by a collapsing economy which is a result of our announced departure from the EU mean that we are facing decades of turmoil and loss of face in the world. The Tory Party in particular is dealing with its own problems as the membership is now down to less than 100,000 people, according to this report estimated at 70,000. So the control of the party who are control of the country and controlling our departure from an International Partnership which we helped to form is controlled by a group of people no bigger than one average constituency in the nation. In the same way the numbers of people who want to leave the EU compared to those who are opposed to it has shifted because of the uncertainty we face nationally and it is estimated that this will continue to change, particularly once we really face a period of International isolation.

There are 650 MPs in Parliament, if one of them claimed that 100% of his constituency was sufficient to determine the way in which Brexit was negotiated, and who gets to sit at the Cabinet table he would be quietly walked to a back room, offered a sleeping bag and told to sleep off his delusion. Yet the same number of people is currently controlling the way forward for the whole nation. What is even more disturbing is that those people who truly are in control of the nation as a result of their donations get to focus their attention on such a small organisation. If the Businesses and private donors who set the pace for the Government were to focus their donations on say the Beaver Scouts whose membership is 103,000 or Baptist Church members with a membership of 150,000 and instead ask these bodies to run the nation it is probable that the outcome would be very different. Looking back over the last 12 months in terms of registered donations to the Tory Party which excludes the donations hidden from sight and the ones below £7,500 they have received £40,000,000 which if instead donated to the Beaver Scouts or Baptist Church would make a huge impact on the communities in which they were based. Of course these are just the political donations, and have no bearing on the running of the nation itself, but then one wonders if many of the 70,000 members of the Tory Party have any real influence beyond their constituency fundraising dinners.
