A rather disturbing imbalance in the Military?

lloyd 1Yesterday I blogged a piece from the House of Commons which arose from a question raised by Lloyd Russell-Moyle, today I have another question from the same person. However there is no other connection or similarity and I suspect it will be some time before I spot another question from Lloyd so this is not a theme or an obsession. On Monday Lloyd asked the question shown above. The answer is as indicated although the table would not fit into the image shown and frankly it is less important. The numbers vary over the five year period, with 79 – 98 volunteers attending the Defence and Security Equipment International (DSEI) and 54 – 59 volunteers attending the Farnborough International Airshow (FIA). One wonders why so many more volunteer for DSEI than for FIA although having attended various trade shows at Excel I imagine there is more free food and drink at the show. However following on from Lloyds very good question, I have one of my own. Would the Military invite its workers to volunteer to protect people at a CND rally or a Peace based event? I personally find the idea of an employer asking for volunteers something of a two edged sword, unless of course anyone putting on an event can approach the Military for volunteers. There is the risk that such a request is seen as a way of improving ones career possibilities. I would personally wish to see this ended, before this years Farnborough show in July. One aspect that is most disturbing is that these volunteers may well be assisting foreign government officials who will be buying weapons that may in due course be used against the people who are volunteering. If these workers wish to attend FIA this year or DSEI next year, they can go as visitors. If the Government need people to protect visitors, they need to recruit people to do the job and then when an MP asks how much the chaperoning costs, we will know and can respond to our MPs appropriately. We need to see an end to violence in our world, not a promotion of its benefits.
